KANSAS CITY FAST FACTS
- “The City of Fountains” is home to over 200 fountains, the most famous being the J.C. Nichols Memorial Fountain. The only city in the world that exceeds Kansas City in number of fountains is Rome, Italy.
- The Country Club Plaza four miles south of downtown Kansas City, is an upscale shopping, restaurant, entertainment and business district with architecture modeled after Seville, Spain. The Plaza is famous for its yearly Christmas light display and the televised lighting ceremony on Thanksgiving evening.
- Greater Kansas City serves as the headquarters for such companies as H&R Block, Sprint Nextel Corporation, AMC Theaters, Hallmark Cards, Russell Stover Candies, Applebee’s, DST Systems, Inc., Garmin and American Century Investments.
- Kansas City is ranked as one of the top cities in the U.S. for Art Deco buildings.
- There are around 600 parks in Greater Kansas City. The largest, Swope Park, is 1,769 acres, making it the 2nd largest urban park in the U.S.
- 18th and Vine is home to Kansas City’s historic jazz district. Alongside Basin Street in New Orleans, Beale Street in Memphis, 52nd Street in New York City and Central Avenue in Los Angeles, 18th and Vine gave birth to a new style of jazz in the first half of the 20th century. Now it is a historic center of African American culture, housing both the American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum
- Kansas City is world famous for its barbecue. Kansas City, Missouri alone has over 100 barbecue restaurants, the most famous being Arthur Bryant’s, Gates Bar-B-Q and Fiorella’s Jack Stack. Arthur Bryant’s has been visited by Presidents Harry Truman, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. Other notable customers include Steven Spielberg and Jack Nicholson.
- Greater Kansas City museums and historic sites include the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art , the Truman Presidential Library Museum, the American Jazz Museum, the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum , Union Station and the Liberty Memorial — the official World War I monument and museum of the United States. Also, the Big Blue Battlefield of the Battle of Westport is being restored and Fort Leavenworth is in driving distance.
- Kansas City, Missouri is home to the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium and the Kansas City Chiefs and the Kansas City Wizards at Arrowhead Stadium, located side-by-side forming the Truman Sports Complex. Kansas City, Missouri is also home to the Kansas City Brigade arena football team at Kemper Arena and the Kansas City Explorers tennis team at Barney Allis Plaza. Kansas City, Kansas is home to the Kansas Speedway and the T-Bones minor league baseball team.
- Kansas City is renowned for its neighborhoods, and there are many. The Crossroads Art District is home to a thriving art scene and the city’s best Mexican restaurants.
